HANDS ACROSS THE WATER
Western Red Cedar Curio/Jewelry Box
This was a very special theme project. We had a Japanese home stay student come to live with us. She was here in Canada to learn English. She could speak a little English but it was interesting for a while. I wanted a gift she could take back home that would remind her of us and her stay. She would often come into the workshop and watch me work on this box and had no idea it was for her. The final finishing and assembly was kept a secret.
The cubbies in the bottom are fixed while the lift out tray that sits on top of the cubbies, can slide back to front or can be removed completely.
The Link between Canada and Japan was the maple leaf on the lid. This maple leaf is made from woven bamboo plywood. The most unusual wood I have ever seen. I repurpose anything I can; it adds an element of mystery and story background in my projects (I’m really just a cheap Scotsman).
Salvaged clear western red cedar. I milled the wood to size; it was originally scrap 2×4 ends cut from the cedar skirts for hot tubs.
A great find; the woven Bamboo plywood I salvaged from a tool store that had received a drill press from Taiwan in a crate made of this unusual product.
Oil based Honey Maple Stain, with water based gloss polyurethane.
