Medium density fiberboard is the basis for these boxes.  The construction details are the same but the hardware is different to give them a unique look.  The interior is lined with velvet on a backing and is glued into the removable base.  Only the bottom 2 drawers work.

The top drawer is false and is your display area when the lid is open.

I built a secret compartment under the removable velvet display area.  There is a ¾” secret compartment under the velvet bottom.

To access this compartment, you remove the middle drawer and push up the velvet platform using a finger through a hole in the compartment base.  Then using your free hand, lift the complete velvet base out to access the secret compartment.

The black curio boxes are made from MDF and also contain small secret compartments.

MY daughter-in-law Trish (who is an artist) hand painted them with foliage and oriental writing.

These are fun projects that are inexpensive to build and the compartments add character and mystery.

½” MDF
A durable craft type velvet you can adhere to ¼” plywood substrate
Hardware of your choice
120 grit sand paper
Wood glue
Paint & Clear coat

Gloss sprayed on latex.
Sprayed on protective water based gloss polyurethane top coat

Tip:  MDF has a tendency to swell and absorb water base finishes.  Before I painted these, I made a spray-able slurry of wood glue.  I brushed the cut edges and sprayed the flat surfaces to seal these areas.  Some light 120 grit sanding between coats may be necessary.  This usually takes several coats to completely seal the MDF.  This goes quickly because the glue dries in about 30 minutes and you can coat again.  The time taken to seal the project will ensure the final coats are smooth and glossy.
